Reimagining The Patch
Since opening in 1928, the Augusta Municipal Golf Course has had multiple different layouts.
Following the announcement of renovation project, three world-class golf course architects were asked to provide their expertise to the project: Tom Fazio, Beau Welling and Tiger Woods. Tom Fazio was given the responsibility of leading the design efforts of the 18-hole course, and Tiger Woods was tasked with leading the design of the short course. Beau Welling would assist in the design of both courses and lead the layout of the practice facilities.
After establishing a 50-year lease with the City of Augusta for the Municipal Golf Course and acquiring various parcels adjacent to the property, the master plan began to take shape. The unique boundaries of the property, bordered by Damascus and Wrightsboro Road on one side and by Daniel Field’s runways on the other, presented a unique challenge to the course architects. The property is now known for its resemblance to an elephant with The Loop occupying the ear of the elephant and the 5th and 6th holes making up the trunk.
Both Fazio and Welling set out to create an approachable golfing experience — one that would appeal to golfers of all skill levels. The revitalized layout was designed to create dramatic playability while honoring some of the holes’ original designs.
As such, the new design features generous, rolling landing areas off the tee.
The golf course features three types of turf in the playing areas. The putting surfaces are TifEagle bermuda while the fairways and rough features Tahoma 19 bermuda grass. Adjacent to the primary playing areas, players are confronted with Centipede grass.
The most significant decision came early in the project when the clubhouse was shifted from its old location at the south end of Daniel Field’s 5/23 runway to the highest point of the property closer to Wrightsboro Road.
From this new vantage point, the first tee of the golf course and clubhouse offer tremendous views of the property’s 150-foot elevation change, providing stunning views of the course and newly imagined practice facilities.
